Narrow city balcony, reimagined

A two-metre balcony that had become storage, rethought as a reading nook.

These are design concepts created to show what's possible — not photographs of completed client projects.

Objective

Get usable seating and greenery into a balcony most people would write off as too narrow.

The challenge

Depth. There isn't room for standard outdoor furniture, and an air-conditioning unit takes one corner. Anything freestanding would block the walkway.

Design direction

Build seating into the short wall so the walkway stays clear, lay decking over the existing tiles to warm the floor, and take the planting vertical instead of using floor space. Lighting kept low and warm so the space works in the evening.

Selected materials

  • Composite decking over existing tiles
  • Built-in bench with outdoor-fabric cushions
  • Vertical planting on the blank wall
  • Terracotta pots along the railing
  • Warm festoon lighting
