Coastal chalet terrace

A sun-bleached chalet terrace given shade, seating and planting that survives salt air.

These are design concepts created to show what's possible — not photographs of completed client projects.

Objective

Make a holiday terrace usable through the day, with materials that last between visits.

The challenge

Salt air and strong sun degrade most furniture quickly, and the terrace sits empty for long stretches — so anything specified has to cope with neglect as well as weather.

Design direction

A pale, low palette that doesn't show dust and sits with the whitewashed walls. A shade sail rather than a fixed structure, so it can be taken down out of season. Dry coastal planting that tolerates missed watering.

Selected materials

  • Low modular seating in off-white and sand
  • Canvas shade sail
  • Dry coastal planting in pale ceramic pots
  • Low timber table
  • Lantern lighting
